Dangerous Goods Storage
On 12th August 2015 two massive explosions in the port of Tianjin, northern China, killed more than 100 people, left hundreds more injured and devastated large areas of the city.
They took place at a warehouse at the port which contained hazardous and flammable chemicals, including calcium carbide, sodium cyanide, potassium nitrate, ammonium nitrate and sodium nitrate.
Officials still insist it is not yet clear what triggered the blasts and say they are still investigating. Calcium carbide, known to be at the site, reacts with water to create the highly explosive acetylene.
Chemical experts suggest an acetylene blast could then have detonated the other chemicals for a much larger blast.
Chinese media said that at least one member of staff from Tianjin Dongjiang Port Ruihai International Logistics, which owns the warehouse, has been arrested.
This serves as a stark reminder to all that the following regulations are not to be taken likely and if in any doubt seek advice.
- AS 1940-2004, The storage and handling of flammable and combustible liquids
- AS 3780-2008, The storage and handling of corrosive substances
